Luke 14:33 (NKJV)
“So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.”
What do you have that possesses your heart? Dreams, family members, relationships, goals, antiques, things, money, lusts, social media, pride, self, anger, unforgiveness, the right to lash out when things do not go your way, your want-to-be-heard, the right to be first, and to be respected and remembered?
You will find that as you embark on this journey of being a disciple of Jesus, His ever-gazing eyes will search out the things in your heart that possesses you. These things are actually first loves, and Jesus will often bring you to a crossroad where you will have to choose between taking up your cross or your family’s wishes for your life. Him or your desire to be in such and such relationship. Him or your fear of public speaking. Him or your timidity of sharing your faith with others. Him or your most cherished sin; etc.
Do not be alarmed. Jesus does not search your heart with burning eyes of condemnation, but instead with burning eyes of pure love for you (see Mark 10:21). Jesus knows that once He has a claim on every part of your life, then you will truly be free. Until we exchange our earthly treasures for a wooden cross, we will never be a disciple of Jesus, which is where true freedom lies (please, see John 8:31-32).
Do not be discouraged. A heart that has nothing to hide from Him is a heart that knows freedom. Pay attention to this: Every person that encounters Jesus will have their “Rich Young Ruler” moment (see Mark 10:17-22). Only a few leave it all.
